Best Time to Visit Lapland
Visiting Finnish Lapland during the winter months of December to March is the optimal time to witness the beautiful Finland Northern Lights.
Plan to stay for 3-5 days for a chance to witness the light display. During that time you’ll be able to take advantage of fun winter activities such as cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and sledding while the country is blanketed in thick snow.
In early spring, clear skies provide excellent viewing opportunities around the time of a new moon for minimal light interference. From February to March you can also visit during the Poro Cup and witness Reindeer racing.

USE THE AURORA FORECAST
On a trip to Alaska, I became obsessed with this Aurora Forecast website. It has a 27 day forecast that you can use for trip planning based on the prior months activity that is likely to repeat.
If you can book your trip less than a month in advance, you will have a better idea about the days with a stronger aurora prediction.
At the time of your trip, the 3 day forecast will have better data about when you can expect to see the aurora. Finally the 1 hour forecast updates every 30 minutes for more real time information.
Getting an aurora app is very helpful too. In addition to giving you the short term forecast, it will also give you aurora alerts.
PLAN YOUR FINLAND TRIP WHEN THERE ARE PLENTY OF HOURS OF DARKNESS
At the beginning of February, there are 6.5 hours of daylight while the beginning of March has 10.
Both February and March offer plenty of darkness for viewing but by the beginning of April, it’s not as ideal since there are already 14 daylight hours. The more dark hours, the better.
AIM FOR CLEAR WEATHER
Wherever you travel to see the northern lights, you need clear skies to see them. In Finland or Lapland in general, that time is early spring. March is an ideal time to see the Aurora Borealis.
MAKE YOUR TRIP TO FINLAND LONG ENOUGH TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS
