How to Plan the Best Morocco Desert Camping Experience

A trip to Morocco is immensely richened with an adventure into the desert. Unlock a world of new experiences while interacting with local Berber communities, camel trekking to your camp, and taking in the allure of the starry night sky.

There are two distinct areas where most of the Morocco desert camps are located: the Agafay Desert and the Sahara Desert.

When we did this trip, we opted for a fully planned tour, just like this 3-Day Trip from Marrakech to Merzouga including food, hotels and an overnight in the Sahara Desert.

We absolutely loved it and were thrilled to have the whole thing planned for us so we wholeheartedly recommend this option, however, there are a few things to consider.

  1. The accommodations were clean and decent but very basic. If you want something nicer, with a private bathroom, you should book one of the Morocco desert camps below.
  2. If you don’t have time for a 3 day excursion to the Sahara Desert, you can easily get an amazing desert camping experience in the Agafay Desert and it only takes 1 day of your itinerary.
  3. If you rent a car in Morocco, the world is your oyster and you can book the Morocco desert luxury camp of your choice.
  4. Desert camping in Morocco is best to visit in March or one of the best trips in October for the best weather.

Glamping in Agafay Desert Luxury Camps in Morocco

The Agafay Desert is just a short 35-45 minutes drive outside of Marrakech, making it ideal for those on shorter trips to Morocco. This area is less sandy but boasts tremendous views of the snow-capped Atlas Mountains.

Staying in the Agafay Desert is more of a glamping experience with stylish tents like the chic riads in Marrakech. Some properties have pools and amenities you can’t get in the middle of the Sahara desert.

With less sand, it doesn’t have the same desert feel as the Sahara Desert, however these desert camps are much easier to get to and can provide a more comfortable stay.

We love this area for its ambiance and as a base for day trips to surrounding valleys, villages, and wildlife spots.
