This holiday book gift guide was inspired by the extra holiday reading time but the books are so amazing, it’s the perfect list to kick off the year. My goal was to pick a small list of slam dunks that have glowing reviews so you know it’s a winner. If you have a 2019 reading goal like mine, you might want to read all of them!
Holiday Book Gift Guide Fiction
Where the Crawdads Sing is a contemporary historical fiction novel about a young girl that has been abandoned by her family. She has to fend for herself in the marshes of North Carolina. It’s a coming of age story mixed with a murder mystery as this wild girl is suspected of killing a football star by the local townspeople. The reviews of this page-turner are beyond glowing.
Of course this list needs to have a fun, beach read and The Kiss Quotient is it. A story about an Asperger’s computer wiz that became wealthy from an algorithm she created. She is less successful in the world of dating so she hires an escort to help her catch up. Called fun and sexy, this book is also being turned into a movie.
Holiday Book Gift Guide Nonfiction
An investigative journalist uncovered the truth about a medical diagnostic Silicon Valley startup called Theranos and its founder Elizabeth Holmes who is currently facing fraud charges. Bad Blood is an in depth look at everything he exposed in this riveting real-life news story. It’s on the New York Times Bestseller list and being made into a movie starring Jennifer Lawrence.
Regardless of your political affiliation, a First Lady’s life is pretty much a guarantee of interesting reading. Becoming is an inside look of Michelle Obama’s journey to the White House and the time spent there. I’m excited to hear her perspective about raising kids in the White House, being the first African American First Lady, meeting incredibly interesting people, and life before and after the White House. It’s no surprise that this book is flying off the shelves.
Educated has been on Amazon’s bestseller list for 42 weeks! It’s the author’s life story. Raised in a survivalist Mormon family, abused by her brothers, and supposedly home schooled, she educates herself enough to break free and go to college. From there, she excels to the highest levels of education and transcends the life she was born into. The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, former Presidents, notable magazines, Oprah, and so many more have lavishly praised this book. Definitely the “must-read” of the year.
If you’re not sure what book to buy or want a bigger present, another great gift is a subscription or gift card.
- Audible – A subscription to Audible is a great gift! They have all the latest books. Audio books are perfect for commuters, fitness buffs, carpool parents, frequent flyers, road trip lovers and more. You can buy 1, 3, 6 or 12 month subscriptions. You can also buy book credits. If you are new to audible, use this link to get your first 30 days and 2 books free. You can also give this gift to someone who is already an audible member.
- Amazon Prime – Seriously, is there a better gift than free shipping from the place that has everything? The best part is that it includes Prime video – the gift of movies, TV, and music too. You can buy 3 months or a full year. If the recipient is already a Prime member, they can exchange it for an Amazon gift card. Lastly you don’t have to worry about buying a lifetime subscription, it DOES NOT automatically renew.
- Amazon EGift Card – I give this as a gift more than any other gift card because everyone loves it. You can email it or text it with a cute animated message. You can also set it to deliver on a specific day like Christmas or someone’s birthday.
I’d love to hear in the comments if you’ve read any of the selections this holiday book gift guide. Also please include any great recommendations of your own. If you are still looking for other last minute gifts try the Gift Guide for Travelers or this Hostess Gift Guide. Happy reading!
